Travertine, Marble & Ceramics
Mediterranean, luxurious or modern?
Travertine, marble and ceramics are three materials that are particularly sought after in interior design today. Each has its own story – and, depending on its origin and characteristics, brings a distinctive effect to the living space: Mediterranean with rustic charm, luxurious and timelessly elegant, or modern and uncomplicated.
Travertine – Mediterranean & Rustic
Travertine is a porous limestone that appears in warm beige tones and is often quarried in Italy. It is formed by deposits of lime-rich water, often around hot springs. Travertine was already used in antiquity for famous buildings such as the Colosseum in Rome – today, it is especially popular for modern dining and coffee tables made of travertine.
With its open-pored structure and earthy coloration, travertine has a rustic appearance and conveys Mediterranean serenity. A travertine table adds warmth and texture to modern interiors.
✨ Tip: Wipe up liquids quickly and apply sealant occasionally – this keeps the surface beautiful for a long time.
Marble – Luxurious & Timelessly Elegant
Marble is a natural stone formed by the transformation of limestone under pressure and heat deep within the earth. The most famous deposits are found in Carrara (Italy), Spain, and Greece. Each slab of marble is unique, characterized by its distinctive veining.
Light Carrara marble represents classic elegance, while darker varieties such as Nero Marquina (Spain) or Emperador (Italy) create dramatic contrasts. A marble table is a true statement piece – luxurious, glamorous, and yet timeless.
✨ Tip: Because marble is porous, it should be treated with some care. Use coasters, wipe up spills immediately, and use pH-neutral cleaners – this way, the table will retain its shine for many years.
💡 Note: Some product descriptions also mention mineral marble. This is not genuine natural marble, but a composite material made from fine marble powder and resin. It resembles polished marble visually but is lighter and easier to maintain.
Ceramics – Modern & Versatile
Ceramics are made by firing natural raw materials such as clay, kaolin, and quartz at very high temperatures. There are different grades: stoneware and porcelain stoneware are particularly dense and durable – ideal for tabletops. So if a product description says “stoneware,” it refers to high-quality ceramic.
Thanks to modern technology, ceramic slabs can now be produced in countless colors and textures – from stone effects to remarkably realistic marble looks. Often, a thin ceramic layer is laminated onto a glass substrate: visually it looks like solid natural stone, but it’s significantly lighter, stronger, and easier to maintain.
A ceramic tabletop is scratch-resistant, heatproof, and resistant to stains – perfect for anyone who loves the refined marble look but prefers a more practical, everyday solution.
✨ Tip: For cleaning, a damp cloth or mild dish soap is all you need – it doesn’t get any easier.
