What is a short pile carpet?

A short-pile rug creates great accents in any home. It can be used as a colourful rug for the bedroom or living room, as a doormat in the hallway or as a bath mat. Such a rug is a soft cushion that makes the living space particularly cosy. The fibres of the rug are relatively short at one and a half centimetres, which creates an orderly impression in the room. The short-pile rug is very hard-wearing, resilient and resistant to dirt, particularly due to its structure. This makes it ideal for use as carpeting throughout the home.

The naming is particularly clear. Short pile refers to all carpets with a pile height of 1 to 15 millimetres. A high-pile carpet, on the other hand, starts from a pile height of 16 millimetres up to a height of 40 millimetres. The term short and high pile carpet has nothing to do with the actual size of the carpet, but only with the pile height. The individual fibres of the carpet are referred to as the pile.

The range of materials for short pile carpets is quite large. These range from cotton, hemp, jute, leather, coconut fibre, jute and nylon to polyester. Sisal is a particularly popular material. Not only is it very robust, but its natural colour means it can be used almost anywhere. It therefore integrates perfectly into the personal room concept.

In addition, the colourful variety of designs leaves nothing to be desired and makes the short pile rug an indispensable piece of furniture. Such rugs are available in a vintage look, retro style, with silhouettes, with patterns from the world's metropolises and as imitation animal skins. So there are no limits to the imagination.

The before and after parts of a short pile rug

A short pile is particularly suitable for carpets with colourful patterns because they stand out better in the room. The fibres of a short pile rug are woven much more tightly and therefore create an ideal top layer for patterned designs. Another major advantage is that dirt cannot accumulate so quickly in the short fibres, making this carpet easier to clean and therefore much less sensitive.

One disadvantage of such short-pile carpets is that they are often not perceived as soft and cosy, even though they might be. Short-pile carpets do not usually convey the impression of a woolly feel and cosiness.

However, short-pile carpets are very suitable for households with allergies, as the short fibres are rarely susceptible to mites, house dust or dirt. Hair and crumbs can also be quickly removed with simple vacuuming. Even washing out stains will not pose a major challenge for owners of short pile carpets.
