Récamières - modern and versatile pieces of furniture

The récamière can look back on an eventful past, as the ancient Romans already rested on the ottoman. Elaborately decorated backrests with comfortable cushions were common even then. Having disappeared into oblivion for a long time, the récamière was to experience a new heyday in the Baroque era, the age of decadence and debauchery. Today, ottomans are back in fashion and can be perfectly combined with a modern furnishing style. Today, ottomans are anything but old-fashioned. The origin of the récamière

Julie Recamier gave her name to this characteristic piece of furniture and was instrumental in its spread. The wealthy Roman woman had herself painted on the récamière a good two hundred years ago, which quickly made the récamière the most popular piece of furniture at the time. The récamière was practically the place to sit while spending time in good company!

The characteristics of the récamière

The récamière is very similar to the chaise longue, but only has armrests and no backrest. Today, the term "récamière" is used to describe reclining and seating furniture whose seat is not completely surrounded by a backrest. This seating and reclining furniture does not necessarily have to have an additional armrest. Due to their design, the relationship between the récamière and the ottoman is clearly recognisable.

Today, the ottoman is often a component of living room landscapes, as it can easily do without a backrest if required. Despite its antique origins, the récamière is a popular piece of furniture, especially in our modern age. It can be bought as an extension to the classic sofa or converted into a comfortable guest bed in an instant.
