Leather is a beautiful addition to the atmosphere of any home, with its versatility and soft suppleness making it functional and luxurious for clothing, accessories and car interiors. However, maintaining and prolonging the life of your leather items requires preventative maintenance with quality leather care products.

Most of the time, when you want to clean leather, you simply need to prevent it from drying out or changing the appearance of leather items. With these concerns in mind, you can probably spend a lot of money on leather conditioners, but if your leather item has a slight sheen and is the type most commonly found on jackets, boots and furniture, you can use a few products that you probably already have on hand.

These will do the job just as well, but cost next to nothing and don't contain chemicals like commercial leather cleaners. However, if the leather you are cleaning is untreated, such as a baseball glove, or is soft like suede, you will have a little more trouble cleaning it.

Basic cleaning techniques for leather

The basic task at each stage of cleaning is thorough vacuuming, using a hoover to remove dirt, loose soil and other particles. Never use a hoover with rotating brushes on the leather, as this could cause damage to the leather. While you are cleaning the leather with the hoover, you should pay particular attention to the seams and crevices, as these generally tend to collect crumbs and other things. When the vacuuming is complete, it's time to clean the surface.

As with all other materials, leather should be cleaned using non-aggressive methods before considering other options. Never apply leather care products directly to the leather. Use moderate pressure and rub the leather conditioner in a circular motion to remove any oils and other foreign substances from the leather.
